- April16th2013:missingsectionsofthisbookhavenowbeenrecorded,andthefullbookhasbeenrecatalogued.DanielDefoe’s‘AJournalofthePlagueYear’(1722)isafictionalizedaccountofthebubonicplagueepidemicthatstruckLondonin1665whichDefoewitnessedasafive-yearold,theyearbeforetheGreatFireofLondon.ThisworkisamongthefirstEnglishnovels.Like‘RobinsonCrusoe’,‘MollFlanders’andseveralotherofhisnovels,Defoepublishedthisworkasthoughitwerebasedonprimarysourcesandwasnot,sohepretended,anovelatall.ThiswasDefoe’swayofdevelopinganaudienceamongthereadingpublicforfictionwriting.Theworkisremarkableinitsabundantuseof“tellingdetail”tocreateanimpressionofverisimilitude,andfornearlytwohundredyearsitwaswidelyconsideredapioneeringworkofjournalismratherthananovel.Indeed,itisstillassignedasrequiredreadinginjournalismcourses.
