- AndersonservedasthirdofficeraboardtheEamont.EamontwasanopiumclipperbuiltinCowes.EamontwasinvolvedintheopeningofJapantoforeignersin1858,servingasadispatchboatbetweenNagasakiandShanghai,andwasoneofthefirstvesselstoopenupatradewithFormosa.TheEamontwasemployedinthenegotiationsforthefirstcommercialtreatywithJapan.OnthisoccasionsheranintoNagasakiandquietlydroppedanchor,inspiteofthefactthatoppositiontotheproposedcommercialtreatywasverystrongatthetime.Onthefollowingmorning150boat-loadsofJapaneseattemptedtotowhertosea,beingevidentlyignorantofananchor'sraisond'etre.Butthoughtheyattemptedseveralsimilarmethodstogetridofhertheyrefrainedfromanyarmedattack,and,eventually,hermissionwascompletelysuccessful.Thiswasin1858,andtheEamont'screwsawmanywonderfulsightsinthattierraincognita.TheSeptemberTyphoonof1858destroyedseveralwell-knownopiumclippersatDoubleIsland,includingtheAnonyma,Gazelle,Pantaloon,andMazeppa.EamontwasanchoredoffDoubleIsland,with"150fathomsofchainoutandasecondanchorbackedonitat60fathoms."Thewavesintheanchoragewereestimatedtobeaslargeas40feet,andtheEamont’screwhadtocutawayhermasts.Eamontwasoneofonlytwoshipsinthatanchoragetosurvivethenight,theotherbeingtheHazard.(SeeWikipediaarticleonEamont(schooner))
