- Darwinwrotethebook,whichheentitledRecollectionsoftheDevelopmentofmyMindandCharacter,forhisfamily.HestatesthathestartedwritingitonaboutMay28,1876andhadfinisheditbyAugust3.ThebookwaseditedbyCharlesDarwin’ssonFrancisDarwin,whoremovedseveralpassagesaboutDarwin’scriticalviewsofGodandChristianity.ItwaspublishedinLondonbyJohnMurrayaspartofThelifeandlettersofCharlesDarwin,includinganautobiographicalchapter.TheomittedpassageswerelaterrestoredbyDarwin’sgranddaughterNoraBarlowina1958editiontocommemoratethe100thanniversaryofthepublicationofTheOrigin.ThiseditionwaspublishedinLondonbyCollinsunderthetitleofTheAutobiographyofCharlesDarwin1809-1882,withtheoriginalomissionsrestored,editedandwithappendixandnotesbyhisgranddaughterNoraBarlow.Theoriginalisinthepublicdomainasitscopyrighthasexpired,butthelaterversionremainsundercopyright.
